Frequently asked questions
What is a favicon?
A favicon is the small icon that appears in a browser tab, in bookmarks and in search results next to your site’s name. Phones also use a larger version when someone adds your site to their home screen.
Which files do I need?
A favicon.ico in the top folder of your site is the classic and still the most widely supported. Adding PNG versions at 16 and 32 pixels, a 180-pixel Apple touch icon for iPhones and iPads, and 192 and 512-pixel icons for Android covers every modern device. This tool makes all of them, plus the web manifest and the lines of HTML that link them.
What picture works best?
A simple, bold, square logo with few fine details. At 16 pixels wide, small text and thin lines disappear. Start from an image of at least 512 × 512 pixels, ideally a PNG or SVG with a transparent background.
How do I install it on my website?
Upload the files to the top folder of your site, then paste the lines from the box into the <head> of your pages. On WordPress and many website builders there is a Site Icon setting where you can upload the 512-pixel PNG instead.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The icons are made in your browser, so your logo never leaves your device.
