How do I reduce a PDF to under 1 MB or 500 KB?
Upload the PDF, choose "Aim for a size…", type the size you need and click Compress PDF. The tool tries gentler settings first and tightens them step by step until the file fits.
Why can't I select the text after compressing?
To make scans and photo-heavy files much smaller, each page is saved as a compressed picture, which removes the text layer. If you need searchable text, keep the original or use a smaller scan resolution at the source.
Which level should I choose?
Medium suits most documents. Light keeps small print sharp for printing. Strong gives the smallest file and is fine for reading on screen. Black & white helps with scanned text pages.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The compression is done in your browser, so the document never leaves your device. Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened.
