Frequently asked questions

How do I extract audio from a video?

Choose your video, pick a format (MP3 at 192 kbps is the default), and click Extract audio. The audio is separated from the picture in your browser and offered as a download. Use Start and End to extract only a section, for example for a ringtone or a quote.

Which format and bitrate should I choose?

MP3 plays everywhere; 192 kbps sounds very good for music and 128 kbps is fine for casual listening. M4A (AAC) gives slightly better quality at the same size on Apple and Android devices. For speech such as a lecture or podcast, 64 kbps mono is small and clear. WAV and FLAC are lossless and best for editing or archiving, but WAV files are large.

What does “Original audio — no re-encoding” do?

It copies the audio track out of the video exactly as it is, so there is no quality loss and it finishes in a second. The file type follows the audio inside the video: AAC becomes .m4a, MP3 stays .mp3, and so on. Use it when you just want the existing audio, and choose MP3 when you specifically need an MP3 file.

Can I extract from a video with several audio tracks?

Yes. If the video has more than one audio track, for example different languages, a track menu appears in the Audio box so you can choose which one to extract.

What does Normalize loudness do?

It evens out the volume to a standard level (−16 LUFS), so quiet recordings are brought up and loud peaks are kept in check. It is handy for lectures, interviews and phone recordings. It re-encodes the audio, so it is not available with Original audio.

Can I convert one audio file to another format?

Yes. You can also choose an audio file such as WAV, M4A or FLAC and convert it to MP3 or another format with the same options. Only extract audio from videos and recordings you own or have permission to use.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your video never leaves your device. Only the converter engine itself (about 32 MB) is downloaded, once, and cached by your browser.
