Frequently asked questions

How do I make a GIF from a video?

Choose your video, set Start and End to the moment you want (about 3 to 10 seconds works best), pick a preset, and click Create GIF. The GIF is built in your browser and offered as a download.

Why is my GIF so big, and how do I make it smaller?

A GIF stores every frame as a separate picture, so size grows with the number of frames and the dimensions. To shrink it, make the clip shorter, lower the width (480 px or 320 px is plenty for chat and social posts), lower the frame rate to 10 or 8, and reduce the colors. The Small file preset does all of that at once.

What do frame rate, colors and dithering do?

Frame rate is how many pictures per second; 12 to 15 looks smooth for most clips and 20 is very smooth. A GIF can use at most 256 colors, and fewer colors means a smaller file. Dithering mixes colors to hide banding: Bayer gives smaller files, Floyd–Steinberg and Sierra look smoother, and None works best for flat cartoon-style graphics.

Does a GIF have sound?

No. GIF is a silent format, so the audio is dropped. If you need sound, convert the clip to a short MP4 instead, or extract the audio separately as an MP3.

Can I make the GIF play once instead of looping?

Yes. Under GIF settings, change Looping from Loop forever to Play once. You can also change the Speed to make it slow-motion or faster.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your video never leaves your device. Only the converter engine itself (about 32 MB) is downloaded, once, and cached by your browser.
