BMI Calculator

Body Mass Index from your height and weight, with the healthy weight range for your height.

Asian ranges use lower cut-offs because health risks rise at a lower BMI in South Asian populations.

BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis. It does not separate muscle from fat, so it can mislead for athletes, older adults and people with a very muscular or very small build. It is meant for adults aged 18 and over, and is not suitable for children or during pregnancy. Speak to a doctor about your health.

Frequently asked questions

How is BMI calculated?

BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in metres)². For example, 68 kg at 1.70 m is 68 ÷ 2.89 = 23.5. In imperial units the calculator first converts pounds and inches to kilograms and metres.

Why are there Asian and standard (WHO) ranges?

The WHO standard calls a BMI of 25 or more overweight and 30 or more obese. Research shows that people of South Asian origin carry more health risk at lower BMIs, so Indian and Asian guidelines use 23 for overweight and 25 for obesity. Choose the scale that applies to you, and ask your doctor which one they use.

What is a healthy BMI?

A BMI from 18.5 up to 24.9 is the standard healthy range, or up to 22.9 on the Asian scale. The calculator also shows the weight range this corresponds to for your height.

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

No. BMI only compares weight with height. It can read high for muscular people and low for people who have lost muscle, and it says nothing about where fat is carried. Treat it as a starting point, and for children and teenagers use growth charts instead.
